CIC EDUCATION DEPARTMENT

The Carpenters Industrial Council offers a variety of training programs to aid Local Union officials in the performance of their duties. The courses offered are continually reviewed and revised to meet the needs of the Local Union. Classes offered are listed below, along with a brief description of each.

If your Local is in need of a training program listed here, contact your Council Representative, regional office or the council office to schedule a session for your Local.

 

Basic Steward Training - 4 hour

This training for current or potential shop stewards teaches participants how to properly represent workers in their facility. Participants are taught how to identify, investigate, write and process a grievance. The participants are also given research skills for getting into and knowing their contract. All participants are also given a Resource Manual for future use.

Steward Training - 8 hour

This is a more in-depth training which includes more study on investigating a grievance and presenting the grievance at more formal steps. This class also includes some basics of communication.

*Participants must have successfully completed the Basic Steward Training to be considered for this course.

Advanced Steward Training - 14 hour

Advanced Steward Training is for stewards and Local Union officers who are true leaders in their local and or workplace. This training runs 14 hours over two days and covers a review of the 4 hour but in more depth in areas of investigating a grievance, note taking, just cause standard and arbitration preparations. The course also has several case studies where leaders are challenged in how to handle several workplace issues. Covered also in this course is how to slot and diagram the workplace and build membership support for issues facing your Local along with how we deal with diversity within the Local and the workplace.

Health and Safety Training

This course teaches Local Union members to identify possible hazards and work with management to correct them. Emphasis is placed on OSHA regulations and compliance. Sessions are available for completion of both 10 hour and 30 hour OSHA training certifications.

Officers Training - 7 to 8 hour

This teaches executive and financial officers how to properly perform the duties associated with their positions. The training focuses on both the legal (DOL) and Constitutional (UBC) responsibilities. Officers are taught basic bookkeeping and record keeping skills as well as the general reporting requirements.

Negotiating Committee Training - 4 to 6 hour

This course teaches negotiating committee members about the phases of collective bargaining. How to prepare for negotiations, negotiations at the table and committee responsibilities of representing to the membership the final settlement offer. Also included is the basics of a one-on-one committee and how to build membership support for bargaining.

FMLA Training - 4 to 5 hour

The Family Medical Leave Act can be complicated and sometimes confusing to our members. This class gives stewards and Local Union officers information on the Federal FMLA Guidelines as well as what state law may cover.
